One of the most playful mosaic designs in the Greco-Roman world is the ασάρωτος οίκος, the “unswept floor.” Found in banqueting rooms of some elite houses, these floors encouraged guests to enjoy the food, luxury, and hedonistic atmosphere of the sumptuous meals being served. The debris of the banquet depicted lying on the floor serves as a reminder of the dining experience.
Our design is an artistic rendering of an “unswept floor” from the 2nd century AD by the Greek artist Heraklitos. Many of the items are scraps of expensive seafood (lobsters, sea urchins, oysters, and porphyry shells), fruits and vegetables, and even a little mouse with a walnut that adds both humorous delight and a narrative element to the composition.
