In the ancient Greek world, potters and vase painters were among the first artisans to depict and celebrate their craftsmanship on the final product. In addition, a number of them signed their work using their own names after the expressions ΕΠΟΙΗΣΕΝ (made) and ΕΓΡΑΦΣΕΝ (decorated) respectively. This unprecedented choice contributed to the creation of a sense of individualism within society.
Our design from an Athenian black-figure vase (575-525 BC) features an artistic rendering of two artisans working at the potter’s wheel. One figure forms the clay into shape while the other decorates or finishes a formed vessel.
