A unique aspect of Athenian democracy was the process of ostracism, where citizens could “elect” to exile someone from the region for 10 years. The name of the “candidate” was scratched onto a piece of broken pottery (known as an ostracon) and placed name-down in a pile. If a minimum of 6,000 “votes” were cast, the names were counted and the individual receiving the most votes was ostracized and given 10 days to prepare before their exile began. In many cases, the process was used to proactively remove individuals the people believed could possibly become a threat to the state at some point in the future.

Our design is a modern take on this ancient practice with an ostracon featuring the surname of perhaps the most controversial individual in American political history.
