Marcus Aurelius

Regular price $38.00

One of the most well known and famous Roman emperors was Marcus Aurelius, who ruled the empire from AD 161 to 180. He was a follower of Stoic philosophy and wrote one of its principle surviving works, known as the "Meditations," during his military campaigns between AD 170-180. Originally intended for personal use to provide guidance and self-improvement to the emperor, it is now considered to be one of world's great philosophical works.

Our design features an artistic rendering of Marcus Aurelius' bronze equestrian statue in Rome, the only equestrian statue to have survived from antiquity intact. This monumental sculpture dates to around AD 175 and shows the mounted emperor with his hand outstretched in a gesture of clemency. The face projects a serene calmness even after years of nearly constant warfare securing the empire's borders, reflecting the Stoic principles Marcus Aurelius based his life upon.
