One of the most famous Greek myths is that of the Minotaur. In it, King Minos of Crete ordered the half man/half bull creature be imprisoned at the center of a labyrinth so elaborate that its builder, the legendary Daedalos, could barely escape it himself. With the help of Ariadne (daughter of the king) and a ball of string, the Athenian hero Theseus killed the Minotaur and escaped the maze.
The use of labyrinths as decorative elements in large artistic compositions was popular during antiquity, with many examples discovered in both public and private structures. Our design is an artistic rendering based on one such 3rd century AD “maze mosaic” discovered in the House of the Fountains at Conimbriga, Portugal.
