Archaeologically, a graffito (plural graffiti) is any mark, image, or writing scratched or engraved into a surface deliberately. At Pompeii, which boasts over 11,000 recorded samples, many graffiti are devoted to sport, particularly gladiator contests. Our design is based on one such example from the House of the Labyrinth. The figures are from left to right: the overseer seated on a raised platform; a gladiator holding a trident descending a set of stairs; an official wearing a tunic and holding a staff; a gladiator of the Samnite type; a gladiator of the Murmillo type; and another figure wearing a tunic and holding a staff - possibly another official or a spectator. A handwritten inscription contains two lines. The first is a "by-line" for the scene: “Faustus, slave of Ithacus, Neronian, at the amphitheater." The second records the outcome, presumably of the match depicted: "Priscus, Neronian, fought 6, victor. Herennius, fought 18, killed.”
