The writing system known as hieroglyphs emerged from the preliterate artistic traditions of ancient Egypt as early as the 4th millennium BC. It is characterized by its elegant pictorial appearance and was used extensively in official inscriptions on monuments, stelai, and funerary contexts. Composed of three basic sign types representing words, sounds, and meaning clarifiers, hieroglyphics continued to be used as a written form of communication in Egypt well into the late Roman period (4th c. AD). Our design is an artistic rendering of a typical New Kingdom inscription from a stela at the site of Saqqara. The coloration is based on the shades of blue found on Egyptian faience, a type of non-clay ceramic.
