It is perhaps the worst wedding gift in history – The Golden Apple of Discord. Having not been invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris – the goddess of Discord, decided to attend anyway. She brought with her a golden apple that bore the inscription Tei Kallistei (“To/For The Most Beautiful”). At the banquet following the marriage Eris tosses the apple into the midst of the guests, sparking a debate among the goddesses Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena as to whom the apple referred. The ensuing “beauty contest” judged by the Trojan prince Paris and his decision in favor of Aphrodite ultimately led the Trojan War.
