Judgement of the Digital Soul

Regular price $38.00
According to ancient Egyptian beliefs, when an individual died their fate was determined by weighing their heart against the Feather of Truth. If the heart was lighter than the feather, their soul could pass into the underworld. If it was heavier (meaning the person was more wicked than good) the heart was discarded and eaten by the crocodile-leopard-rhinoceros hybrid god Ammit – also known as the “Devourer of Souls.” Once this happened, the individual and their soul ceased to exist – the ultimate punishment for the ancient Egyptians.

Our design adapts a scene depicting the Judgement of Hunefer from the 19th Dynasty of the New Kingdom (ca. 1275 BC). The deceased is on the left wearing white with the gods Anubis and Ammit in the center under the balance. On the right stands Toth, the scribe of the gods, ready to record the outcome. Our version provides a modern surprise twist, however, with the deceased not judged on his heart but on the social media “digital soul” he created during his life.
