One of the most iconic works of Roman sculpture is the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. While the ancient city was adorned with a number of such works, this is the only example to have survived intact. Erected either to honor his triumph over the Germanic tribes in AD 176 or as a commemoration soon after his death in AD 180, this larger than life-size work depicts the emperor with a raised arm addressing his troops (adlocutio). Despite his martial posture, however, he is without armor or weapons, reinforcing his image as bringer of peace rather than a military hero. Rendered in monochrome white on a black background.
