On March 15, 44 BC Julius Caesar was assassinated by a cabal of Senators led by Brutus and Cassius.  According to Plutarch, a seer warned Caesar he would be harmed no later than the Ides of March (March 15th). On this day, Caesar passed the seer and joked "The Ides of March has come," implying his prophecy wasn’t fulfilled. The seer replied "Yes, it has come, but not yet passed."

The front of this design features Caears’s statement. The seer’s reply is on the back accompanied by a gore-covered aureus (gold coin) issued by Brutus in 42 BC. It depicts a pileus, the traditional freedman's cap (symbolizing the Roman people’s liberation from Caesar’s rule) flanked by two daggers and the legend EID MAR (Eidibus Martiis).
