The Native American Mimbres culture was centered on the large river valleys of southwestern New Mexico and southeast Arizona. During its “Classic” period (1000-1150 AD) the Mimbres produced a characteristic black-on white pottery decorated with geometric designs, sometimes featuring images depicting elements of the natural world. Our design is an artistic rendering of one such vessel depicting a stylized Datura flower, a plant whose powerful hallucinogenic properties was a key component in Mimbres’ ritual practices.
