The themes of ancient Greek tragedy continue to resonate with modern audiences and influence cinematic and dramatic art.
In ancient Greek drama protagonists had a five-point arc, the “Tragic Cycle,” that takes them from initial happiness and prosperity to complete ruination. The five elements are: Olbos – Initial happiness; Hubris – An act of extreme pride or dangerous behavior defying norms and challenging the gods; Phthonos – Divine jealousy that prompts a warning to stop the offending behavior; Ate – Recklessness that causes the warning to be ignored; Nemesis – Divine retribution that leads to the protagonist’s downfall.
Our design features these five terms symbolically arranged and colored to indicate the gradual transformation from happiness to disaster experienced by the ancient Greeks.
