Talos was a bronze giant created by Zeus. He was meant to run around Crete three times a day and protect the island by launching rocks to enemy ships that were approaching. If they somehow managed to land, Talos would make his body lethally hot to kill them. He successfully defended Crete until the Argonauts with Medea arrived at the island. Through trickery, Medea killed Talos by draining his ichor, the divine blood that provided his life force.
Our design depicts a winged Talos ready to defend Crete with his right arm raised and a stone in his hand. It is based on a silver coin minted at Phaistos dating to 300-280 BC. Below the image is a passage from the Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius where Talos is introduced.
