One of the most common decorations in Aegean Bronze Age art is the octopus. Whether depicted realistically or in an almost abstract manner, this creature and other nautical motifs symbolize the central role of sea in early Greek civilization. Our design is based on a collection of small gold octopus appliques discovered at Mycenae. These objects date to the 16th century BC and would have been used as decoration on garments of the ruling class.
