The painted pottery of ancient Greece holds a special place in archaeology, not only for its intrinsic beauty but also as the main source of information about the development of Greek artistic tradition. While in the majority of cases the names of those creating these works is unknown, many are signed using the verbs epoiesen (“made”) and egraphsen (“decorated/painted”). This is the first time in the history of art such attribution occurs.  This design features an artistic rendering of two artisans from a black-figure vessel dating 575-525 BC. Both are depicted working at the potter’s wheel: the one on the left forming the clay into shape and the one on the right finishing (either trimming or possibly decorating) a formed vessel.
