Dis Manibus (commonly abbreviated DM) is a standard opening to Roman funerary inscriptions. It is a memento mori indicating departure from the world of the living to join the Manes, the immortal spirits of the dead in the underworld. The Romans believed these spirits, especially of one’s ancestors, guided and protected their daily lives. In return, the living honored and gave thanks to these “divine shades” by venerating them at festivals and in household shrines. The ivy leaf on some Roman tombstones is used as punctuation, decoration, and a subtle reference to Dionysius/Bacchus and his links with resurrection and eternal life.
