When it comes to the ancient Greek gods, nothing can be taken for granted. According to mythology, one day Zeus was suffering from a headache so bad he ordered Hephaestos to split his head with an axe to relieve the pain. The cause of his agony was revealed when Athena, goddess of wisdom, crafts, and warfare, sprang from Zeus’ head fully grown and armed. Our design features a scene depicting this event found on a black-figure vessel dating 575-550 BC. It depicts Zeus, seated on a throne holding a thunder-bolt above his head. Athena is shown emerging from his head, while Hephaestos, holding a double-axe and wearing a workman’s chiton and boots, looks on at the spectacle.
