Like many, we at Ancient Impressions have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than sit idly, we decided to search the ancient world for some bit of wisdom that applied to the current world situation. We discovered one in a famous mosaic from Timgad, Algeria dating from the 1st-2nd c. AD. The mosaic likely marked the entrance to a private bath complex and features the inscription BENE LAVA ("Wash Well"), read as the visitor entered, and SALVOM LAVISSE ("It is a healthful thing to have washed") as they departed. Rather than the sandals of the original, however, we have updated the composition with two pairs of hands, the washing of which represents one of the keys to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading.
