It’s one of the most famous sculptures, of perhaps Rome’s most famous emperor – the Prima Porta Augustus. Discovered at the estate of his wife Livia outside of Rome, it is a marble copy of a bronze original that was set up by the Senate to honor the primus inter pares. Augustus is depicted as Imperator, commander of the army with his right hand raised addressing the troops. The inclusion of small Cupid riding a dolphin reinforces his divine connection to Venus through his adopted father (and now god) Julius Caesar.
