In Greek mythology, the Sirens were dangerous creatures whose enchanting songs lured sailors to crash their ships on the rocks. Unfortunately, Odysseus and his men needed to pass them on their journey back to Ithaca. Following the guidance of Circe, Odysseus put wax in each crewman's ears before ordering himself lashed to the mast so he could listen to the Sirens without endangering the ship. Our design is an artistic rendering of this famous scene based on a fresco from Pompeii. Executed in an impressionistic manner associated with third-style painting, the scene depicts Odysseus tied to the mast of his ship with the Sirens perched on rocks overlooking the bones of previous victims.
