One of the earliest writing systems, cuneiform developed in Sumer during the late 4th millennium BC. While it began as a series of pictograms, over the course of the 3rd millennium BC it transformed into its “classic” form composed of wedge-shaped impressions made with a reed stylus. Gradually replaced by the Phoenician alphabet, cuneiform became extinct by the second century AD. Our design is an artistic rendering of the "standard inscription" of Ashurnasirpal II, dating to 865-860 BC. It was located behind the king’s throne in his North-West Palace at Nimrud and recounted his titles and accomplishments.
